The 55+ Community Checklist: Choose the Lifestyle, Not Just the House
A 55+ home search should be about more than square footage, countertops and a garage.
For many retirees and downsizers, the surrounding community becomes an important part of everyday life.
That is why I recommend creating a lifestyle checklist before choosing a home.
Start With Your Normal Week
Imagine an ordinary week rather than a vacation week.
What would you actually do?
Would you use a fitness center?
Play golf?
Walk?
Play pickleball?
Attend classes?
Join clubs?
Meet friends for coffee?
The activities you will realistically use should carry more weight than amenities that simply look impressive during a tour.
Think About Your Social Life
Moving into a new community can be an opportunity to build a new social network.
Consider whether the community offers activities that appeal to you.
Also ask yourself whether you prefer a highly social environment or a quieter setting.
There is no right answer.
There is only the right fit for you.
Evaluate Location
A community can look wonderful, but location still matters.
Consider driving distances to:
Grocery stores
Medical offices
Hospitals
Restaurants
Shopping
Airports
Family
Recreation
Look Carefully at Maintenance
One reason people downsize is to simplify.
Ask yourself how much exterior maintenance you want.
Understand what the HOA handles and what remains your responsibility.
Understand the Financial Structure
Before purchasing, review current HOA documents, fees, rules, restrictions and any applicable assessments.
HOA information can change, so buyers should rely on current documents rather than old listings or informal statements.
Martha’s Tip
Spend time in the community when there is no special event happening.
That is when you can get a better sense of everyday life.
