Moving From California to Southern Arizona? Build a Real Cost-of-Living Comparison
Comparing home prices is a logical starting point for relocation.
It should not be the ending point.
Create two columns:Current California LifeandPotential Southern Arizona Life.
Start with housing. Include the mortgage or cash requirements, property taxes, homeowners insurance, HOA or community charges and expected maintenance.
Then look at utilities, transportation, healthcare and ordinary household spending.
If your move coincides with retirement, your financial picture may be changing at the same time your address changes.
That is a good reason to involve your tax, financial and insurance professionals rather than relying on general statements about which state is “cheaper.”
For financed purchases, interest rates also affect the calculation. Freddie Mac reported an average 30-year fixed rate of 6.69% for the week ending August 6, 2026.
Martha’s Tip:Compare the lifestyle too. A monthly expense that gives you regular access to an amenity you genuinely use may have more value than a lower-cost option you do not enjoy.
Relocation is both a financial and lifestyle decision.
Build your comparison aroundyour actual life.
