The One-Year Downsizing Test
Downsizing becomes difficult when every possession turns into a separate emotional decision.
A simple filter can help.
Ask:Have I used this during the last year?
If the answer is no, follow it with another question:Is there a realistic reason I will use it in my next home?
This approach is especially useful for duplicate cookware, extra linens, small appliances, serving pieces, clothing and furniture.
Sentimental belongings deserve a different process. A family photograph and a third waffle maker obviously aren’t the same kind of decision.
There is another question I particularly like:
If I didn’t already own this, would I buy it again today?
If you wouldn’t spend money on it today, think carefully before spending money and effort to pack, move and store it tomorrow.
Martha’s Tip
Don’t measure downsizing success by how much you discard.
Measure it by whether the belongings you take with you support the home and lifestyle you are creating.
