Downsizing Made Simple: Keep What Matters Most

September 01, 20261 min read

Downsizing becomes emotionally exhausting when the entire project is framed around loss. A better approach is deciding what deserves a place in your next chapter.

Begin with the belongings you regularly use and genuinely value. Then address duplicates, items that no longer fit your lifestyle and things you have been storing simply because you never made a decision about them.

Use five destinations: keep, family, donate, sell and discard/recycle. Give yourself permission to work gradually.

Measurements matter too. Know the rooms, storage and furniture dimensions of your future home before paying to move pieces that may not fit.

Martha’s Tip:Photograph sentimental objects you cannot practically keep. Sometimes preserving the memory is enough.
